How to get Red Stockings

Magical attack +2
Defense +1

Red Stockings are shoes especially interesting for wizards : they are the shoes giving the best bonus of magical attack (+2).

They are only obtainable during the Christmas quest. So you better be prepared.

1. Alts

The first thing to do is create alts (alternative characters). If you have only one character, and thus do this quest only once, then you only have a 36% probability of obtaining Red Stockings. Doing Christmas quest with 3 characters gives you a probability of 74% to get Red Stockings, and doing Christmas quest with 5 characters gives you a probability of 89% to get Red Stockings.

To be able to do the Christmas quest, an alt has to be at least 4 weeks old. Since the Christmas quest begins on 1st December, it is recommended to create your alts before 3rd November. They can still be useful if created before 26th November.

Your alts also need to be at least level 40 to be able to participate to the Christmas quest. They can be raised to level 40 at any time. The 4 weeks delay is only relative to their creation date.

One way to raise quickly a new character to level 40 is to do the Lora Tay quest at level 1 (50 000 exp), then the Dark Green Dye quest at level 30 (20 000 exp), then the Focusing Skill and Brawling skill quests at level 35 (12 000 exp). Then you can kill some Green Slimes, South East of Tulimshar, to reach level 40 (put all your points in dexterity and use a Forest Bow).

2. Items

To prepare Christmas quest, you also need to collect items. For each character who will do the quest, you need to possess those items (nice path) :

If your alt is level 70 or more, you should in addition get 15x Iron Potion.

There is an alternate list of items you could use instead of this one (naughty path). If you want to know about it, read the wiki page relative to Christmas quest.

I will try to edit this post to make a better tutorial about how to get those shoes.

Rill : if you see mistakes or bad English, feel free to edit this post as you wish.

Thank you for starting this thread, Glag. Here are just a few things to keep in mind:

It is true that if you win the battle in Hard Mode but do NOT satisfy the spirit (that is, if you do not correctly complete the other parts of the quest), you will increase your chances of obtaining the Red Stockings. But you will NOT be able to get the full base level increase.

In order to get the full base level increase, you have to win the battle a number of times in Hard Mode AND properly satisfy the spirit (that is, by correctly completing all parts of the quest.)*

This may not be so important at lower levels; but for those at higher levels, especially in the mid to high 90's, the base level increase will save much time that would otherwise have to be spent in grinding.

Another option for increasing the odds for obtaining stockings might be to create and use multiple alts. According to the instructions, any character would just have to begin the quest and get through one Easy Mode battle for 2 uncommon rewards. (The wiki is vague about it, but usually a character has to be 4 weeks old and level 40 for annual quests.)

One last thing to consider is that some players have no interest in being mages, and might be willing to sell or trade stockings they get from the quest.

[*For those looking for a full base level increase, the Nice Path seems to be more reliable than the Naughty Path for achieving it.]

You are right. The best way to get Red Stockings is to create low level alts. In worst case scenario, in easy mode, you have a probability of 36% to get Red Stockings, If you repeat this 6 times, you have a probability of 93% to get Red Stockings. If you repeat this 10 times, you have a probability of 99% to get Red Stockings.

In the "Nice path walkthrough" part of the wiki page, at the third step, there is a mention about a requirement : in order to help Ismo, the player need to be level 30. This page also says : "if you are lower than level 30 you can skip this part, however you will not get the best reward".

I don't know if it threatens the obtainment of Red Stockings.

To be on the safe side, I will raise as many alts as I can to level 30. I think it takes less than two hours for each alt.

Hi Glag,

After speaking about this to Prsm in-game, I just edited my post based on his response. He said the standard for a character to participate is 4 weeks old, level 40, and don't believe the wiki. 😀

So this is an emergency : those who wants Red Stockings need to create alts immediatly. I edited the first post to point that out.

Afaik, the christmas event last until Jan 6th. Precisely 4 weeks before that date is Dec 9th. So still some time to create ALTs

If you don't want to spend too much time in levelling them to 40, consider to do the diseased hearts quest. The only needs for that is, survive the way to graveyard just once. Preferably trade in the bones and diseased hearts on a double EXP event.
This way it is just a question of how many money you want to put into your ALTs.

The following quote is taken from a 2012 post in TMW forums about the Christmas Event:

"The Event will start on December 1st and last until the 24th. The reward time starts on December 25th and lasts until January 6th."

https://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=16791&hilit

If this is still accurate, the time for fighting battles ends on December 24th. And remember, you will need help from other players to fight. So I would not wait to create alts.

It should take only a matter of minutes to set up an alt. It does not have to be at level 40 for 4 weeks, it just needs to be in existence for 4 weeks.

Also, the post indicates that the level for participation in the event is 30, not 40. 30 might be correct, but without reading the code behind the event, I cannot say for certain. Regardless, level 40 would be better than 30 at surviving the battle which, even on Easy Mode, can be challenging for lower levels.

For anyone interested in obtaining Red Stockings, check out this thread. :) (Last year some of the posts were edited as issues came to light, so it might be best to read through all of them.)
