Ahoy Crew!

As mentioned in an earlier thread, GM Prsm is hosting a limerick writing contest for St. Patrick's Day. Writing limericks is fun and easy, once you get the hang of it. And for those of you who may need a little help, here is some information about how to write a limerick:

βœ… A limerick must have exactly 5 lines.

βœ… Lines 1, 2, and 5 -

  • must rhyme
  • usually have 7-10 syllables, with 3 syllables stressed

βœ… Lines 3 and 4 -

  • must rhyme
  • usually have 5-7 syllables, with 2 syllables stressed

βœ… Limericks are known for being silly, funny, or punny. The last line of a good limerick contains the punch line or β€œheart of the joke.”

Here are examples of limericks:

There once were two cats from Kilkenny.
Each thought that was one cat too many.
So they started to fight
And to scratch and to bite -
Now, instead of two cats, there aren't any.

There once was a lady named Sue
Who had nothing whatever to do
And who did it so badly
I thought she would gladly
Have stopped before she was through.

There once was a farmer from Leeds,
Who swallowed a packet of seeds.
It soon came to pass,
He was covered with grass,
But has all the tomatoes he needs.

There was an old man of Peru,
Who dreamt he was eating his shoe.
He woke in the night,
With a terrible fright,
And found it was perfectly true.

I'd rather have Fingers than Toes,
I'd rather have Ears than a Nose.
And as for my Hair,
I'm glad it's all there,
I'll be awfully sad, when it goes.

There was a young woman named Bright,
Whose speed was much faster than light.
She set out one day,
In a relative way,
And returned on the previous night.

There was a young lady of Kent,
Whose nose was most awfully bent.
She followed her nose,
One day, I suppose,
And no one knows which way she went.

Here are some helpful links:

  • A short children's video that explains limericks in a simple song format so you can hear the stressed/accented syllables

If you have questions or need advice or help with writing limericks, feel free to post or pm.
